Hard Lotion Bar Recipe

Most homemade lotion recipes involve quite a few ingredients, blenders and more mess than I’d prefer to clean up.  In contrast, all you need for these these bars is three ingredients, one pot, and molds – that’s it!

Ingredients
  • part Cocoa Butter or Shea Butter
  • part Oil, such as Coconut Oil or Olive Oil
  • part Beeswax

Homemade Body Butter

[glossary_exclude]

That is my first experience with Body Butter! Suffice it to say…my body LOVES it!

This recipe makes a fairly large batch of whipped body butter.  It starts with almost 2 full cups of butters and oils, so my suggested blends for essential oils call for up to 30 drops of essential oils (that’s a very low 0.1% dilution).  That’s what I prefer since (1) I’m using the whipped body butter in a fairly large amount all over my body on a daily basis and (2) my primary goal of the whipped body butter is not the therapeutic benefits of the essential oil.  You can, of course, adjust the amount of essential oil up or down to your preference.

  • 25 drops peppermint (I LOVE the peppermint combined with the chocolate scent of the cocoa butter!)
  • 30 drops orange OR tangerine (like the peppermint above, I think citrus smells amazing with the chocolate aroma of the cocoa butter)
  • 15 drops eucalyptus and 15 drops spearmint
  • 15 drops bergamot and 15 drops grapefruit
  • 12 drops wild orange, 9 drops cedarwood, and 6 drops ylang ylang
  • 10 drops patchouli and 20 drops tangerine
  • 15 drops lavender and 15 drops lemon
  • 10 drops helichrysum, 10 drops frankincense, 5 drops sandalwood, and 5 drops lavender

Please be careful adding citrus essential oils (especially bergamot) in high amounts if your skin will be exposed to the sun.

Another recommendation is to substitute shea butter for equal parts of shea, mango, and cocoa butter.

Non-Greasy Moisturizing Cream Lotion

If you’re looking for something a bit lighter for the summer months, or just want to drink your coffee without dropping the mug, here is a great non-greasy moisturizing lotionalternative for you! This one’s made with shea butter and almond and jojoba oils, which are much more easily absorbed. And of course, it doesn’t contain anything you can’t pronounce.

Whether they’re dealing with a cold winter or playing in the dirt all day, your hands can take a beating. And while it doesn’t feel (or sound) quite as luxurious as the body butter, this non-greasy moisturizing lotion is easy to whip up and will still leave your hands feeling happy regardless of what they go through!

Ingredients
  • 1/2 Cup
    Shea Butter
  • 2 Tablespoons
oil (I used 1 Tbsp each of almond oil and jojoba oil)
  • 10 - 15 Drops
your favorite essential oils (I used lavender and rosemary)

Nourishing Body and Hand Cream

This lotion recipe uses essential oils. While they aren’t necessary, adding them can turn your lotion from being simply moisturizing to something that really addresses what is going on with your skin.

  • Dry or aging skin?  Try rose & geranium
  • Need to be energized and refreshed?  Try lavender, lemon, and grapefruit
  • Troubled skin like psoriasis or eczema?  Try helichrysum, frankincense, lavender, sandalwood, chamomile, rose or jasmine
  • Want to avoid Stretch Marks?  Try helichrysum, lavender, patchouli, neroli, rose, & geranium
