Cleaning Wooden Cutting Boards

The only ingredients you need to clean your cutting boards are salt and citrus. You can use the peel from a lemon or grapefruit, or you can use the essential oil (or both!).

Instructions

  1. Lemon or Grapefruit Peel Approach

Cut the citrus in half and remove the fruit. Put a small handful of salt on your cutting board and use the peel of the fruit to rub it into the cutting board. Clean both sides of the cutting board this way, and then rinse with hot water. Any salt will work, but I like a slightly chunkier salt.

  2. Lemon or Grapefruit Essential Oil Approach

Put a small handful of salt on your cutting board and add 3 drops of Lemon or Grapefruit essential oil (right on the cutting board). Use a clean abrasive sponge to rub in the salt and essential oil. Clean both sides of the cutting board this way, using 3 drops on each side, and rinse with hot water.

  3. Use Both!

When you have abundant grapefruits and lemons. You can use the fruit peels, salt and essential oil!

  4. Side effect: Not only will your cutting board smell great and be free of unwanted bacteria—the whole kitchen will smell amazing!

  5. Caution: Lemon and Grapefruit essential oils both react to sunlight. Be sure not to get the essential oil on your skin if you’re going to be in the sun (using cleaning gloves resolves any concern).
