Laundry DIY

I’ve made a lot of homemade household cleaners over the past few years, but it’s only recently that I started making my own homemade laundry detergent. I had seen lots of recipes for liquid homemade laundry detergent, but I didn’t want to mess with a 5 gallon bucket and cooking soap and such.

It just seemed like more trouble than it was worth. Until now. Below are several easy formulas to help with the everyday laundry activities.

Laundry Bombs

Laundry doesn’t have to be a chore. Instead of lugging your detergent, stain stick, fabric softener, and your laundry to the washing machine, here’s a homemade laundry bomb that does it all. You can pick up the basic ingredients at your local grocery store for a few dollars, making these little helpers seriously budget-friendly. Scent with your favorite essential oil for a personalized smell and you’re ready to get washing.

Makes around 28 laundry bombs.

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 Cup
    Washing Soda
  • 1/2 Cup
    Fels-Naptha
  • 2 Tablespoons
    Epson Salt
  • 3 Tablespoons
    hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 Cup
    Vinegar
  • 15 - 20 Drops

Laundry Powder

It takes about 5 minutes to mix up. This recipe is so frugal (just 4-7 cents a load – see cost breakdown below) and I love that it avoids the unpleasant chemical additives in store-bought detergent.

Ingredients
  • 1
bar of Fels Naptha soap (also a great stain remover – just rub on stains!)
  • 3/4 Cups
    baking soda
  • 3/4 Cups
washing soda (found in the grocery store with the stain removers)
  • 3/4 Cups
    Borax
  • 15 Drops
lavender essential oil (or your favorite combination)

Laundry Softener

Ingredients
  • 1 Cup
    Water
  • 1 Cup
    Baking Soda
  • 2 Cups
    White Vinegar
  • 25 Drops
    Lavender

Laundry Spot Remover

My updated method for attacking fresh and set in laundry stains is to essentially combine those posts. The ingredients are still the same as in my original homemade laundry stain remover recipe, but the method is much simpler. Here’s the rundown.

Ingredients
  • 2
    Parts Peroxide
  • 2
    Parts Water
  • 1
    Part Dawn Dish Soap
  • 1
    Part Baking Soda

Laundry Stain Remover

I researched an all-natural way to get stains out and through testing found this simple essential oil stain remover works great! As with most spot removers, it definitely works best if you’re able to treat the spot immediately when you notice the stain.

If you’re not able to that’s ok but it can help produce even better results.

Ingredients
  • 20 Drops
    Lemon Essential Oil
  • 1/4 Cup
    Peroxide
  • 2 Tablespoons
    Castile Soap
